Summer Academy (July 2–August 14, 2017) is a special opportunity for first-year students to jump-start their academic experience by earning six hours of course credit through a track program.
Virginia Tech is one of a select number of universities in the nation to offer a Summer Academy program. More than 1,300 students have benefited from Summer Academy since it launched in 2012.
We know being an official Hokie and getting to campus cannot come soon enough. Basically, you have the whole campus to yourself, along with 350 of your closest friends when you arrive on campus in July for early move-in! You will live with each other in one of two residence halls within walking distance of volleyball and basketball courts, gym facilities, and plenty of green spaces to relax and hang with friends.
Both you and your parents will also participate in orientation in the first few days prior to the start of Summer Academy classes. By doing so, a separate orientation session is not required.
During orientation, you will meet the peer mentors assigned to your track. These upperclassmen also just participated in Summer Academy and can share all their insider knowledge. They are a tremendous resource and committed to making this an amazing experience for you.
Your enthusiasm for Summer Academy is equally matched with Virginia Tech's supportive faculty. These individuals love the unique teaching experience that Summer Academy provides with small classroom environments and getting to know students on a first-name basis.

First few weeks and Hokie Camp
After your first week of classes you will participate in a three-day experience called Hokie Camp. Set aside the word 'camp' for a minute, as it truly is an experience that you will not regret or easily forget. Our students have said attending Hokie Camp truly sealed the deal for them and confirmed why they chose to attend Summer Academy.
Upon return from camp, you will continue with going to classes with your track and attending weekly recitations, led by engaged university faculty and staff members.
And then there is the social component. Your peer mentors will be sure to keep you moving with regular social events and weekend trips hiking, tubing, and just general fun outside. A concluding activity of Summer Academy is ice cream with President Sands, a huge fan of Summer Academy (which you will find out with his tweets and other shout outs).
As we know, it is very important to get a better sense of Summer Academy from those who have attended before. So, here is what students are saying.
“Joining Summer Academy was one of the greatest decisions I have ever made.
This is by far one of the best summers I have ever had. I encourage everyone to consider doing this program because believe me, you will not regret it!
The people, the atmosphere, the activities… everything is just fantastic. GO HOKIES!”
